Dorsal spines (total): 0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 18 - 20; Anal spines: 0; Anal soft rays: 15 - 17. Teeth in 2 or 3 irregular series or in bands on premaxillary and dentary. Origin of anal fin more posterior than anterior 1/3 of body fin base (usually below the 12 to 15th dorsal rays). Body rather high and compressed. Branchiostegal rays 8. Attains 34 cm SL.: elongated; Cross section: compressed.
