📖 Overview

Facultative air-breathing in the genus ; Occurs intertidally on marine shores, typically in beach-rock pools (near fresh water seepages), in brackish pools behind beach dunes, or in sandy mangrove lagoons along beaches or headlands . Primarily a saltwater fish, but very occasionally found in almost entirely freshwater conditions .

🐟 Physical Description

Dorsal spines (total): 6 - 7; Dorsal soft rays (total): 7 - 9; Anal spines: 1; Anal soft rays: 7 - 9; Vertebrae: 25 - 27. Body dusky grey with irregular vertical bars, blotches and small spots, often almost plain grey; first dorsal fin grey, black posteriorly, bright yellow submarginal band present . Longitudinal scales 36-46; TRB 13-18; predorsal scales 12-21, small, reaching forward of preopercular margin but not reaching behind eyes; ctenoid scales on side of body separated into patch behind pectoral fin and area from below second dorsal fin origin back to caudal base . Caudal fin rounded .: fusiform / normal; Cross section: compressed.
