Adults inhabit rocky pools and runs of clear, fairly fast headwaters, creeks, and small rivers . Oviparous , probably open substratum spawners like congeners. Migratory behaviour is undetermined .

Freshwater; benthopelagic. Subtropical North America: Ohio River basin from Muskingum River drainage in Ohio to southeast Illinois (extirpated in Illinois) and south to Tennessee River drainage in Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi, USA; upper Black Warrior River system (Gulf basin) in Alabama, USA.
