Adults inhabit sandy and rocky runs and flowing pools of creeks and small to medium rivers . They feedson insects taken in midwater areas and from the surface . Oviparous , probably open substratum spawners like congeners. Migratory behaviour is undetermined .

🌀 Behaviour
The fish is an omnivore. It consumes chironomids, mayflies, aquatic insects, dipterans, and plants. The fish reproduces through spawning in fast-moving waters. They tend to stay in these waters until winter. The fish lays eggs during the same time and often the same nest as the longear sunfish. The two fish species work together to defend the nest from predators.

Freshwater; benthopelagic. Temperate; 41°N - 33°N North America: Atlantic Slope from York River drainage (where introduced) in Virginia to Roanoke River drainage in North Carolina, USA; upper New River system (Kanawha-Ohio drainage) above Kanawha Falls in West Virginia and Virginia, USA.
