Occurs in rocky inshore areas, common on kelp beds, also on sand bottoms . Feeds on crustaceans, polychaete worms, brittle stars, mollusks, and small fishes . Young are food of steelheads and salmon . Frequently caught by shore and skiff fishers and speared by divers .
