Diagnosed from other species of the genus Hemibrycon by having cartilaginous protuberance, rounded on all branched anal fin in males; absence of a fold on the anterior end of maxilla; (vs. maxilla with folding only at posterior end, except in Hemibrycon rafaelense); and 35-40 pored scales in the lateral line (vs. 40-46; except 46-54 in Hemibrycon colombianus).
