Southern Messmate
📖 Overview
Southern Messmate (Echiodon pukaki) is a ray-finned fish of the family Carapidae. It inhabits marine (saltwater) waters in deep-water environments. This species can reach a maximum total length of 23.2 cm. With a trophic level of 3.6, it is a mid-level predator. It is assessed as Data Deficient on the IUCN Red List.

Eel-like, shallow body depth; 1 to several symphyseal fangs on dentary and premaxilla; lacking cardiform teeth, pelvic fins, and swim bladder rocker bone; a patch of ridges posteriorly on the ventral surface of the swim bladder . Tunic ridges lateral to ventral midline of swim bladder .: eel-like.
