Obligate air-breathing ; Inhabits both temporary and permanent streams and swamps . Feeds on insect larvae and crustacea . Juveniles are found in interstitial pools in papyrus. Browses on plant tissues with ostracods, dipteran larvae, beetles, mollusks and debris .
