Seaweed Aquaculture

Cultivation of edible seaweeds - nori, kombu, wakame, dulse, kelp - one of the fastest-growing aquaculture sectors globally.

Sustainability: ★★★★★ Scale: Any Setup: $5,000+

📖 Overview

Seaweeds need no feed - they photosynthesize. Cultivated on ropes or nets suspended in nutrient-rich coastal waters, they extract carbon dioxide and nitrogen from the water while producing edible biomass. Nori (Japanese sushi wrap), kombu (kelp for dashi broth), wakame (miso soup), and Atlantic kelp for food and biofuel are all commercially cultivated. Global seaweed production exceeds 35 million tons annually - overwhelmingly from Asia.

🐟 Species Commonly Farmed

Nori (Porphyra), kombu (Saccharina), wakame (Undaria), sugar kelp (Saccharina), Atlantic dulse.

✅ Advantages

No feed required. Removes nutrients (potential bioremediation). Grows quickly. Multiple market products (food, biofuel, animal feed, hydrocolloids). Suitable for climate mitigation projects.
