Longline Shellfish - Saltwater
Bivalve Raft Culture
Growing mussels, oysters, and scallops on ropes hanging from wooden rafts - iconic Galician mesetas and other cold-water shellfish operations.
Sustainability: ★★★★★ Scale: Medium
Setup: $10,000+
📖 Overview
Galician bateas are wooden rafts up to 25 x 20 meters supporting ropes of hanging mussels. Chilean, Spanish, and New Zealand mussel industries built billion-dollar economies on this method. Filter-feeding shellfish require no feed - they clean coastal waters as they grow. A single hectare of raft culture can produce more protein per year than a hectare of any terrestrial livestock system.
🐟 Species Commonly Farmed
Mediterranean mussel, blue mussel, Pacific oyster, Peruvian scallop.
