Aquaponics - Freshwater

Aquaponics

A closed-loop system combining fish farming with hydroponic vegetable production - fish waste fertilizes plants; plants purify water for fish.

Sustainability: ★★★★★ Scale: Any Setup: $500+ FCR: 1.4

📖 Overview

Aquaponics integrates aquaculture with hydroponics in a symbiotic loop. Fish excrete ammonia into water; nitrifying bacteria convert it to nitrate; plants absorb nitrate through hydroponic roots; cleaned water returns to the fish tank. The result is two crops (fish + vegetables) from one water source, with 90%+ water savings versus soil agriculture.

🐟 Species Commonly Farmed

Tilapia (heat-tolerant, fast growth), catfish, koi, trout (cold systems). Paired with lettuce, herbs, tomatoes, cucumbers.

Advantages

Extreme water efficiency. No fertilizer purchase. No chemical pesticides possible. Two revenue streams. Suitable for urban agriculture.
