📖 Full Definition
Scutes are enlarged, modified scales or bony plates that form a protective or hydrodynamic function. In jacks (Carangidae) they form a series of keeled plates along the lateral line at the caudal peduncle, strengthening the tail for thrust. In sturgeons they form five rows of bony shields (ganoid scales) along the body. In armoured catfishes (Loricariidae) scutes cover most of the body. Unlike ordinary scales, scutes are not arranged in regular overlapping rows.
