Pelvic fins (also called ventral fins) are paired fins found on the ventral surface. In primitive fishes they are located near the tail (abdominal position), but in more advanced groups they have migrated forward (thoracic or jugular position). In gobies they are fused into a sucker disc. They assist in braking, fine manoeuvrability, and in some species, as tactile organs.
