Occurs over sandy bottoms in rivers. Usually forms schools. Mainly diurnal . Feeds on the fruits and seeds of Moraceae, Myrtaceae, Euphorbiaceae; Coleoptera, Orthoptera, Lepidoptera, and Brachyplatystoma flavicans ; and on plankton, nekton, and crustaceans .
