It inhabits freshwater systems including rivers, streams, and lakes. It occurs in Tropical waters. It is broadly omnivorous, taking invertebrates, plant matter, and detritus. On the IUCN Red List, it is classified as Critically Endangered.

The species in this genus possess very numerous small scales with a maximum midlateral scale count of 60 and up to 17 rows of transverse scales; all scales crenulated; lower jaw very pronounced, protruding beyond the anterior border of the premaxilla; eye quite small .: elongated.
