It is a warm temperate small-scale bottom fish, in flowing streams and rivers, mostly moving among rocks and pebbles. It feeds on small fish, aquatic insects, shrimpsand crabs . Its striking colouration (two colour types, red and yellow) makes it a popular pet fish .
