📖 Overview

Brazilian beardfish (Polymixia carmenae) is a ray-finned fish of the family Polymixiidae. It inhabits marine (saltwater) waters. This species can reach a maximum total length of 20.9 cm. It occurs at depths between 160 and 600 metres. With a trophic level of 4, it is a mid-level predator.

🐟 Physical Description

Dorsal spines (total): 5 - 6; Dorsal soft rays (total): 26 - 28; Anal spines: 4; Anal soft rays: 13 - 15; Vertebrae: 28. This species is distinguished by having the following characters: gill rakers on first gill arch 19-24; with main shaft of the first anal-fin proximal radial strongly arched; anterior process of the first anal-fin proximal radial elongated, about half length of the main shaft; pyloric caeca completely absent or numbering 46-71; spinoid scales with spines arranged in vertical rows; D 26-28 (rarely 22); postero-ventral edge of preopercle rounded; mature specimens with pigmentation of anal, dorsal and caudal fins inconspicuous, lacking a markedly darker margin .: short and / or deep; Cross section: compressed.
