Facultative air-breathing in the genus ; Lives on rocky shores of lakes. Bottom-dweller of upland lakes and associated streams, frequently under and around rocks on gravel substrates . Feeds on insects, small crustaceans and mollusks.

Dorsal spines (total): 0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9 - 11; Anal spines: 0; Anal soft rays: 7 - 8; Vertebrae: 40 - 43. Anterior interorbital laterosensory pore well separated from the posterior nostril. Usually 2 pairs of pores below the lower jaw. Short gill rakers.: elongated; Cross section: circular.
