It inhabits freshwater systems including rivers, streams, and lakes. It occurs in Tropical waters. It is broadly omnivorous, taking invertebrates, plant matter, and detritus.

This species is distinguished from its congeners in the Levant by the following characters: with a complete lateral line; caudal fin deeply emarginatel; caudal peduncle narrow; male individuals with a suborbital groove; pelvic axillary lobe well-developed; flank with 5-7 dark-brown bars Cross section: circular.
