📖 Overview

False-eye jawfish (Opistognathus triops) is a ray-finned fish of the family Opistognathidae. It inhabits marine (saltwater) waters in benthic environments. This species can reach a maximum total length of 4 cm. It occurs at depths between 12 and 32 metres. With a trophic level of 3.2, it is a low-level carnivore, feeding on invertebrates and small organisms. It is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

🐟 Physical Description

Dorsal spines (total): 11; Dorsal soft rays (total): 17 - 18; Anal spines: 2; Anal soft rays: 17; Vertebrae: 22 - 23. This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: rigid upper jaw with no flexible lamina posteriorly, extending 0.6-0.7 eye diameters behind posterior margin of orbit; infraorbitals moderately slender, 2nd and 3rd infraorbitals relatively large, with large sensory canal openings, 3rd infraorbital with moderate suborbital shelf; D XI, 17 or 18; A II, 17; vertebrae 10+22 or 23; scale rows in horizontal series about 45-49, scales absent anterolaterally forward of verticals from segmented dorsal-fin rays 4-5; vomerine teeth 2 or 3; spinous dorsal fin with an ocellus between spines 2-7 .: elongated; Cross section: compressed.
