Few-vertebrae snake eel (Ophichthus oligosteus) is a ray-finned fish of the family Ophichthidae. It inhabits marine (saltwater) waters in benthic environments. This species can reach a maximum total length of 29.1 cm. With a trophic level of 3.7, it is a mid-level predator.

This species is distinguished by the following characters: head 9.7% TL; tail 61% TL; mandibular pores 7; preopercular pores 4; teeth on maxilla biserial, vomer uniserial; dorsal-fin origin is slightly behind pectoral-fin tip; body without blotches or bars, melanophores gathering along lower lip; predorsal 12, preanal 46 and total vertebrae 121 .Cross section: oval.
