Neritic Zone
Upwelling Zones
Coastal areas where deep cold water rises to the surface, bringing nutrients - responsible for the world's most productive fisheries.
Depth: 0-200m Light: Sunlight
📖 Overview
Wind-driven upwelling along west coasts of continents (Peru-Chile, Namibia, California, Portugal-Morocco) brings deep nutrients to sunlit surface waters. The result: dense phytoplankton blooms that support massive fisheries. The Peruvian anchoveta fishery is the largest single-species fishery on Earth, driven entirely by Humboldt Current upwelling.
