Bathypelagic Zone
Bathypelagic Zone
The midnight zone - eternally dark, cold, and pressurized. Bioluminescence is the only light. Home to anglerfish and gulper eels.
Depth: 1,000-4,000m Light: Midnight Pressure: 100-400 atm Temp: 2-4
📖 Overview
The bathypelagic zone (1000-4000m) is one of the largest habitats on Earth - almost entirely dark, cold (2-4 C), and under crushing pressure. The most alien fish live here: anglerfish with luminescent lures, gulper eels with jaws larger than their bodies, viperfish with dagger teeth. Food is scarce - many species can consume prey larger than themselves.
🧬 Adaptations Required
Extreme energy conservation. Predatory adaptations for scarce prey (huge mouths, dagger teeth, expandable stomachs). Bioluminescent lures. Reduced skeleton, watery flesh.
