Abyssopelagic Zone

Abyssopelagic Zone

The abyss - 4-6 km below the surface, near-freezing, crushing pressure. Life is rare, ancient, and slow.

Depth: 4,000-6,000m Light: None Pressure: 400-600 atm Temp: 1-2

📖 Overview

The abyssal zone stretches from 4000 to 6000 meters. Life here is sparse - most nutrients settle from above as "marine snow." The vast abyssal plains cover more of Earths surface than all continents combined, yet remain among the least explored regions of the planet.

🧬 Adaptations Required

Ultra-slow metabolism. Long lifespans. Detritivory (feeding on falling organic material). Massive sexual dimorphism (male anglerfish permanently fused to female).
