📖 Overview

Longtail Pencilsmelt (Nansenia longicauda) is a ray-finned fish of the family Microstomatidae. It inhabits marine (saltwater) waters in deep-water environments. This species can reach a maximum total length of 13.3 cm. It occurs at depths between 400 and 1100 metres. With a trophic level of 3.3, it is a low-level carnivore, feeding on invertebrates and small organisms. It is assessed as Data Deficient on the IUCN Red List.

Dorsal soft rays (total): 10 - 11; Anal soft rays: 9 - 11; Vertebrae: 47 - 50. Branchiostegal rays 4. Slender caudal peduncle with the least depth of which is 4.3-5.6 % SL. Longer snout of 2.3-4.1 % SL .: elongated; Cross section: oval.
