This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following characters: cephalic lateral line canals absent; scales on body limited under pectoral only. Both sexes are black dorsally, lighter towards the belly. Fins are dotted black, male with a black dot on intermediate membrane of first dorsal fin. Both sexes sometimes show two or three rows of black dots on second dorsal fin . Live breeding males with 10-15 dark, irregular bars .: fusiform / normal.
