Dorsal spines (total): 7 - 8; Dorsal soft rays (total): 10 - 11; Anal spines: 1; Anal soft rays: 11 - 12; Vertebrae: 29 - 30. This species can be distinguished among southeastern Hypseleotris (except H. galii and H. moolooboolaensis) by adult males having elongated rays in posterior portions of the 2nd dorsal, and anal fins with fin tips extending along length of caudal peduncle. Differs from H. galii by lacking the dark spot ventrally surrounding the genital papillae in females. Also differs from H. moolooboolaensis in the Mary River by the following set of characters: D VI-VII (vs. VII-VIII), dorsal rays 10-11 (vs. 11-12), and lateral scales 31-33 (vs. 33-34).Cross section: oval.
