Dorsal spines (total): 2; Dorsal soft rays (total): 7; Anal spines: 1; Anal soft rays: 5. Hisonotus montanus can be distinguished from other congeners, except Hisonotus aky and Hisonotus iota by having an infraorbital canal entering the infraorbital series via the compound pterotic vs. infraorbital canal entering the infraorbital series via the sphenotic. It is distinguished from Hisonotus aky and Hisonotus iota by having wider light stripes on the dorsal surface of head extending from snout tip to posterior end of compound pterotic, and by the presence of white marks on dorsal surface of head vs. narrow light stripes on dorsal surface of head extending from snout tip to posterior end of compound pterotic, and absence of white marks on dorsal surface of head .: elongated.
