📖 Overview

Pacific footballfish (Himantolophus sagamius) is a ray-finned fish of the family Himantolophidae. It inhabits marine (saltwater) waters in deep-water environments. This species can reach a maximum total length of 20 cm. It occurs at depths between 613 and 1200 metres. With a trophic level of 4.5, it is an apex predator. It is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Dorsal soft rays (total): 5; Anal soft rays: 4. Distinguishing characteristics of adult female: length of anterior escal appendage 11-38% SL; distal escal appendage 6.2-11% SL; blunt distal lobes of esca; posterior escal appendage 12-41% SL, simple or with bifid tip; posterolateral appendages 2-4 pairs, situated on and below base of escal bulb, length of distal and longest pair 30-45% SL .
