Fiji Scorpionfish

📖 Overview

Fiji Scorpionfish (Eschmeyer nexus) is a ray-finned fish of the family Eschmeyeridae. It inhabits marine (saltwater) waters in benthic environments. This species can reach a maximum total length of 4.1 cm. It occurs at depths between 27 and 43 metres. With a trophic level of 3.3, it is a low-level carnivore, feeding on invertebrates and small organisms.

Dorsal spines (total): 8; Dorsal soft rays (total): 13; Anal spines: 3; Anal soft rays: 8; Vertebrae: 25. Anterior end of isthmus without fleshy papillae. Gill membranes not broadly united to isthmus . Frontal and parietal bones strongly ossified. Preorbital spines absent. Anterior dorsal-fin spines extremely short. Fin rays unbranched. Scales absent except on the lateral line; 10 tubed scales, posteriormost on base of caudal fin; without spinous projections. Pelvic fin membrane adnate to body, fused to membrane of opposite side. Pectoral fin lacking a detached ray .: fusiform / normal; Cross section: compressed.
