Temperate; 50°N - 37°N North America: Great Lakes, Hudson Bay (Red River) and Mississippi River basins from Michigan, USA to Manitoba, Canada and from eastern Illinois to Platte River system in Wyoming and Colorado, USA; disjunct populations in western New York and Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio and Michigan, USA.
