Snout short , 20-25% length of head , deeply rounded and projecting beyond the mouth, which is situated below the nostrils . Mouth inferior; chin not developed, without swelling . Teeth notched in young fishes but worn and truncated in adults . 3-10 teeth in the middle of each jaw . Dorsal fin between one half and twice the anal fin length . Dorsal fin with 34-36 rays; anal fin with 24-36, its origin below the middle of the dorsal; lateral line with 55-65 scales; 12 around the caudal peduncle, which is 2.5-3 times longer than deep . Coloration: dark brown above, silvery-white below .
