Koi Carp Symbolism in Japan and China

Chinese legend tells of carp swimming up the Yellow River, leaping the Dragon Gate falls, and being transformed into dragons. This became a metaphor for scholarly perseverance and social advancement. Adopted into Japanese culture, koi became icons of masculinity and strength - carp-shaped banners fly during Childrens Day (Kodomo no Hi). Modern koi keeping traces to 19th-century Niigata rice farmers who bred colorful mutations from food carp.
