The Compleat Angler & Sport Angling
Izaak Waltons 1653 book that defined recreational fishing as a philosophical pursuit - the most reprinted book in the English language after the Bible.
Era: Early modern Region: England Year: 1653
📖 Overview
Izaak Walton was a linen draper who fished for pleasure in the streams around London. His 1653 book "The Compleat Angler; or, The Contemplative Mans Recreation" framed fishing not as a food-gathering necessity but as a philosophical activity - meditation with a rod. The book has been reprinted over 300 times, the most of any English book after the Bible. It birthed the concept of sport angling and inspired centuries of writing, from Halford's dry-fly manifesto to Norman Maclean's "A River Runs Through It."
