Six-band grenadier

📖 Overview

Six-band grenadier (Coelorinchus hexafasciatus) is a ray-finned fish of the family Macrouridae. It inhabits marine (saltwater) waters in deep-water environments. This species can reach a maximum total length of 62 cm. It occurs at depths between 336 and 910 metres. With a trophic level of 3.6, it is a mid-level predator.

Dorsal spines (total): 0; Anal spines: 0. Head large; eyes also large; snout moderately pointed. Head ridges well developed; underside of head naked except for a small patch below the preopercular angle. Swim bladder large and strongly bilobed anteriorly, with 4 retia mirabilia. Grayish brown, with 6 or 7 broad saddle marks extending below the lateral line; the fins blackish except for the whitish base of the first dorsal and basally on anal in some individuals; the mouth and gill cavities black.: elongated; Cross section: circular.
