📖 Overview

Tapir tadpole (Careproctus tapirus) is a ray-finned fish of the family Liparidae. It inhabits marine (saltwater) waters in deep-water environments. This species can reach a maximum total length of 12.7 cm. It occurs at depths between 170 and 320 metres. With a trophic level of 3.3, it is a low-level carnivore, feeding on invertebrates and small organisms.

🐟 Physical Description

Dorsal soft rays (total): 55 - 56; Anal soft rays: 49 - 50; Vertebrae: 60 - 61. Diagnosis: Slit-eyed careproct with horizontal mouth and silvery coloration of belly and peritoneum; head and snout slanting along a straight line; mouth slit attains vertical of beginning of eye; no rostral fold; eye small 15-16% of head length (HL); gill opening 1.9 to twice as large as eye; opercular lobe small and triangular; posterior teeth larger than anterior, in rows; interorbital space not wide 44-45% HL; vent opens under anterior third of interorbital distance; greatest body depth 96-104% HL; rounded and flattened disc 21-24% HL .: elongated.
