Convergent Evolution in Fish
The repeated independent evolution of similar features in unrelated fish lineages - a pattern especially rich in fish evolution.
System: Muscular Level: Intermediate Discipline: Ichthyology
📖 Overview
Fish provide some of biology\'s cleanest examples of convergent evolution: the streamlined torpedo shape of tuna, ichthyosaurs, and dolphins; electric organs evolved 6+ times independently; eel-like elongation across unrelated orders; ambush morphology across scorpionfish, frogfish, and stargazers.
✨ Fun Fact
Electric organs have evolved independently at least six separate times in fish - electric eels, torpedo rays, elephantfish, some catfish, stargazers, and knifefish - each solving the same problem with different tissues.
