Feeding Behavior
Grazing (Herbivory)
Continuous grazing on algae, seagrass, and aquatic plants - the diet of parrotfish, tangs, most cichlids, and many freshwater fish.
Trigger: Food Function: Direct plant/algae consumption bypasses higher trophic levels Observable in aquarium
📖 Overview
Herbivorous fish are ecological engineers. Parrotfish scrape coral rock, converting algae into fine sand. Grass carp consume enormous volumes of aquatic vegetation. Surgeonfish keep coral reefs clear of overgrowing algae. Without them, coral reefs would rapidly convert to algal reefs.
🐟 Examples Across Species
Parrotfish (Scaridae), surgeonfish (Acanthuridae), grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella), many mbuna cichlids.
✨ Fun Fact
A single mature parrotfish can produce hundreds of kilograms of sand per year from coral it scrapes and digests. Much of the sand on tropical beaches is parrotfish output.
