Spongy rat tail (Bathygadus spongiceps), first described by Gilbert & Hubbs, 1920 is a medium-sized fish in the family Macrouridae (order Gadiformes). Adults typically reach 27.00 cm in maximum length. It inhabits marine coastal and open-ocean environments. Recorded depth range: 892 to 1463 metres. It occurs in Subtropical waters. It is broadly omnivorous, taking invertebrates, plant matter, and detritus.
