On 5 January 2019, a 278 kg Atlantic Bluefin Tuna sold at Tokyo's Toyosu Market for ¥333.6 million — equivalent to just over $3 million USD. The buyer was Kiyoshi Kimura, owner of the Sushi Zanmai restaurant chain, who has made a ritual of winning the annual New Year auction for two decades. The headline-grabbing price reflects not just the quality of a single fish but the extraordinary cultural and economic significance that Thunnus thynnus holds in Japanese food culture, where the fatty otoro belly meat is regarded as the pinnacle of sashimi.
The Atlantic Bluefin is biologically extraordinary. It is one of the few fish species capable of thermoregulation — a network of counter-current heat exchangers (retia mirabilia) allows it to maintain core body temperature up to 21°C above ambient water temperature, enabling it to hunt in cold North Atlantic waters where prey are abundant. Adults can exceed 3 metres in length and weigh over 680 kg, making them the largest of the tuna species. They can swim at sustained speeds of 70 km/h and undertake trans-Atlantic migrations, with the western and eastern Atlantic populations mingling in the feeding grounds off the coast of Canada and in the Mediterranean. This migratory range complicates international stock management enormously.
The conservation story is one of the most contested in fisheries science. Decades of overfishing driven by the sashimi premium drove western Atlantic populations to roughly 15–20% of unfished levels by the 1990s. Since then, coordinated management by ICCAT (the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas) has produced genuine recovery: the latest stock assessments show both western and eastern Atlantic populations rebuilding, and the IUCN downlisted the species from Endangered to Least Concern in 2021 — though many scientists argue this reclassification was premature. The tension between the Japanese sashimi market's appetite, the livelihoods of Atlantic fishing communities, and the species' long-term survival remains one of the defining conservation dilemmas of our time.
